I Love Lucy: Framed Ballet Prints

LUCY VISITS GRAUMAN’S #128 S5, 10.3.55
After Lucy gets her foot caught in the pail of cement at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, she hides from Ricky over at the Mertz’s hotel room. On the back wall above Fred and Ethel’s beds we see two framed ballerina prints.
They are done by painter Cydney Grossman, entitled, “Between the Acts” on the left and “Curtain Call” on the right.

The Mertzes in Monte Carlo: Nicholas Lancret Framed Print

Ethel and Fred Mertz in their Monte Carlo room

On the wall of the Mertzes Monte Carlo hotel room is a well known Nicholas Lancret framed print called La Camargo Dancing. Also seen on the chest of drawers beside the door is a figurine we saw in the Mertzes Connecticut home in another I Love Lucy episode. A figurine of a colonial lady, Florence Ceramics “Charmaine”.

The woman dancing in the painting is Marie Anne de Cupis de Camargo a famous French/Belgian ballet dancer known as La Camargo. She was first woman to execute the entrechat quatre,  the first dancer to wear slippers instead of heeled shoes, and also first to wear the shorter calf-length ballet skirt and the now standard ballet tights.

In the bedroom Set of “I Love Lucy” prominently displayed on the wall behind the twin beds are a pair of ballet sketches in matching frames. One of these original prop sketches turned up on eBay in 2006 and the story that was related in the auction description is an interesting one.

Description from the auction lot:
“This is an ORIGINAL set piece or prop off of the Desilu set for the I LOVE LUCY show! It has been stored for the past forty odd years — and recently found — by me because it was in my family’s storage area since the early sixties!
It is the actual pastel and ink on art paper — an original piece of artwork, not a print — AND the original frame that was used as a prop on the set of the original I LOVE LUCY show starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.” Continue reading I Love Lucy’s Bedroom Set Framed Ballet Pictures
