Owl Bookends Repaint

Here is my attempt at repainting a pair of Borghese owl bookends to resemble the owl bookends seen on the I Love Lucy show. The picture above shows a Borghese bookend on the left and on the right a bookend like the one in Ricardo’s living room on the show which I will refer to as a source to replicate the paintwork and then attempt to apply a marble effect on the base.

The Borghese bookend appears to be a resin copy of the original design on the right which is a cold painted metal/bronze owl on a marble base.

I used three colors to paint the owl. First I painted the eyes in  Yellow Ochre and then two coats of Raw Umber for the rest of the bird with extra touches to darken the forehead area and top of the head and back as needed to match the owl on the right.

For the book it took two layers of green and then a watered down layer of raw umber on top of that to tone down the color of the green and to darken the gold pages.

I used Windsor & Newton Galleria  acrylic paints, Yellow Ochre, Raw Umber and Phthalo Green for the Owl. The color was a good match straight from the tube so no color mixing was needed. The final touch was black for the pupils. I had no  black paint so I mixed some raw umber with ultramarine to create a vintage looking black.

Here we see the source bookend in the center with the Borghese pair on either side. Up to this point the work has been straightforward but the unsightly green speckled base needs a faux marble paint over which is something I have never done before.  I found a video on Youtube which gave me an idea of how to proceed. In retrospect I would have done a test piece first but I just went ahead knowing I could wipe it off at any point or just paint extra layers on top.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFsTGjGVzcE

I experimented with a mix of Cadmium red , Burnt Umber and Yellow Ochre tinted with white for the base following the Youtube video for guidance.  I painted in layers adding streaks of darker and lighter color damping down with a paper towel to soften the effect and  using a clean wet brush to feather it  in places instead of splashing on water as was seen on the video.  The composite picture above shows the Borghese bookends at various stages. Next step is to apply a few layers of matt acrylic varnish to protect the paintwork.

Finally here is a side by side view of the repainted Borghese bookend on the left and the original source bookend on the right.

A shabby vintage B.O Garantie coffee grinder is restored to resemble the coffee grinder seen in the I Love lucy Kitchen.

Following are the before and after photos of the restoration.

As seen in the before and after pictures the shabby metal components  are shining again and new paintwork  seals off the old surface and gives it new life.  As a final touch an ivy motif  is hand painted on the front – inspired by the original coffee grinder as seen on I Love Lucy.

Coffee Grinder to Restore

B.O Garantie Coffe Grinder on eBay

On ebay this week there is a B.O. Garantie coffe grinder (CLICK HERE to see it on eBay) that could be restored to look like the coffee grinder on I Love Lucy which we looked at in a previous post The B.O. Garantie grinder is the only other one I have seen that exactly matches the shape of the coffee grinder on the I Love Lucy  show as seen below in a previous side by side comparison.

It would need to be stripped and repainted /varnished  and an ivy leaf decal painted/applied to the front to get the same look as the one on the show. See previous post for more details:

Lucy Ricardo’s Coffee Grinder

Lucy Ricardo’s Coffee Mill/Grinder

Lucy Ricardo’s coffee grinder can be seen in various locations in the kitchen throughout the I Love Lucy series. In the early episodes it is easily spotted on the kitchen shelf. Lucy’s coffee mill is a wooden hand cranked grinder with an ivy design on the front. I came across one just like it pictured below. The ivy decal appears to be hand painted. The wooden box has  a 4.25″ square base and curved corners and the drawer has a distinctive metal handle, the knob on the crank arm is an inverted teardrop shape.  I have searched extensively for an ID of the maker. One would assume this is an ordinary coffee mill much like any other but when you begin searching  the subtle differences stand out.  Some of the vintage European made wooden coffee mills look similar but only one I have come across matches well.

The only make I have found up to now that fits the form factor, measurements and shape of the components  is the B.O. Garantie square Wooden Coffee Grinder that was made in Czechoslovakia  until  production ceased when the company was taken over by the state in 1950.  They may have been imported and sold under a US brand  but I have no information on that as yet. Below is a page from a vintage catalog showing some of the products of the B.O. Garantie firm. However I have not seen one with an ivy design in any of the old catalog pages I found online.

The B.O. Garantie firm has reopened in recent years under the name Lodos and they still produce coffee grinders today.
Vintage shabby B.O. Garantie coffee grinders can occasionally be found online. If you are a DIY enthusiast it should be easy enough to strip the paint from an old shabby one and and restore it to look like Lucy’s coffee grinder. [  For paint removal on any vintage item I recommend a safe paint stripper that can render inert any leaded paint layers for safe disposal (Lead Out™ Paint Stripper is highly recommended ).]  Look for one that has no dovetail on the front seams, which you can tell by the vertical straight lines that appear on each side through the worn paint as seen in the picture to the right. (if it were dovetailed the square shapes would be seen).  To restore the metal parts see the handy link below in the reference section.

Project: I love Lucy Asian Statue Repaint

Asian statues on mantelpiece of I Love Lucy
Asian statues on mantelpiece of I Love Lucy

I have a pair of Asian man and woman statues similar to the pair of Asian statues on the mantelpiece of I love Lucy, however the colors are quite different from the pair on the show. I decided to try to repaint them to look like the I love Lucy set. I could use a special paint for use on porcelain that I saw at Dick Blick’s, and which can be baked on. However I decided on an ordinary acrylic paint because it will get the look I want and can be scrubbed off again to preserve the original statues as they were. Here is how they looked.

Before: Shabby Nesco Breadbox/Pie Safe
Before: Shabby Nesco Breadbox/Pie Safe

I found a vintage Nesco breadbox (above) in shabby rusty condition to restore. This one is the same type as you see in the Kitchen set of “I love Lucy”, except it was white and had a “garden girl” decal which is barely visible in its current condition. It will take a bit of work to restore it to anything close to original condition, and I have never done anything like this before so its a learning experience for me.
